Hann-Chorng Kuo
Professor Hann-Chorng Kuo was graduated from National Taiwan University (NTUH) in 1979. He received his residency training for four years after serving in the army. He was promoted as a visiting staff in NTUH and lecture of the National Taiwan University in 1985. Then he went to Hofuf, Saudi Arabia and served in Hofuf General Hospital for one year as a diplomatic supportive doctor. In 1988, Hann-Chorng moved to Tzu Chi General Hospital, Hualien, Taiwan and served as the chief of the department of Urology in Tzu Chi General Hospital (TCGH) till now. Currently Hann-Chorng is also the vice Chief Executive Officer of the Buddhist Tzu Chi Medical Foundation and is in charge of the research advance of the Tzu Chi General Hospital group.
He devoted himself into clinical and research works in neurourology and urodynamics, and has published more than 709 peer reviewed papers. Dr. Kuo’s research interests involve urodynamics, lower urinary tract symptoms, interstitial cystitis, overactive bladder, spinal cord injury, neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction, and basic sciences. In recent 20 years, he has a great interest in application of using botulinum toxin injection in treatment of lower urinary tract dysfunction, including neurogenic and non-neurogenic detrusor overactivity, voiding dysfunction due to urethral sphincter dyscoordination, and interstitial cystitis. He had received invitation to give lectures and workshops in Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea for the technics and application of botulinum toxin treatment on functional urology. He had also been invited to attend AUA, EAU, JUA, KUA, and UAA for special lecture and speakers in thematic symposia.
In 2015 UAA in Taiwan, Hann-Chorng had been in charge of the workshop of the simulative surgery held in the Tzu Chi University, Hualien, Taiwan. The simulative surgery workshop was the first one workshop using whole body cadaver to perform laparoscopic surgery, pelvic floor surgery and dissection, which had inspired many participants about the humanity in urological medicine. The 2025 UAA in Taiwan will also have a simulative surgery workshop in Hualien and Hann-Chorng will again be in charge of this workshop.
Hann-Chorng had gained his professor title in Tzu Chi University School of Medicine in 2001. He was the president of the Taiwan Continence Society (TCS) in 2006 through 2012 and was the president of Taiwan Urological Association (TUA) from 2014 t0 2016. In the field of scientific journals, he currently is the Editor-in-Chief of the Tzu Chi Medical Journal, associate editor of LUTS, Continence (official journal of International Continence Society), and Urological Science (Taiwan), member of the advisory board of Nature Review Urology, and is the editor of British Journal of Urology International, International Brazil Journal of Urology, International Neurourology Journal, Korean Journal of Urology, and Current Bladder Reports.
