I have more than 25-years of experience in clinical transplantation and have been working on pre-clinical and clinical research since 1991. The mixed chimerism approach established for the renal allograft tolerance in nonhuman primates has been successfully translated to clinical kidney transplantation (reported in NEJM in 2008). My current research has been directed towards developing a more clinically feasible protocols for immunological tolerance induction, which has been translated to clinical kidney transplantation. Another research interest has been kidney xenotransplantation. In collaboration with eGenesis, kidney xenograft survival exceeding 2 years has been achieved (Anand et al. Nature 2023). Based on this preclinical study, I recently conducted kidney xenotransplantation in a living patient with ESRD, using kidney xenograft with triple knockout of major xenogeneic antigens, PERV knockout and seven human transgenes.
