Dr Sanjay Balwant Kulkarni, MD, MS, Dip. Urology (London), FRCS (Glasgow), Honorary FRCS(London)
Dr Sanjay Kulkarni has been student of University of Pune. He graduated in MBBS and MS under Pune university. He travelled to England to seek further training in Urology from 1981 to 1986. He was trained by Mr Richard Turner Warwick, considered as father of urethral reconstruction. Dr Kulkarni returned to motherland India to serve the people of his country. Today Dr Kulkarni is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in urethral reconstruction.
His wife Dr Jyotsna Kulkarni and Dr Sanjay were pioneer in introducing Laparoscopy in India. They started India’s first animal lab in Pune for Laparoscopy training. Over the years he trained many upcoming generations of laparoscopic surgeons.
Dr Kulkarni established Centre for Reconstructive Urology in 1995. He focused on treating all strata of Urology patients and especially those with stricture urethra. This included patients with stricture, hypospadias and block in urethral passage due to accidents /pelvic fractures. As time advanced the centre became a specialised and the centre performs one of the largest number of Genito-Urinary Reconstructive Surgeries in the world today. The centre is ethical and no patient is denied surgery for economic grounds. In 1992,Dr Kulkarni was appointed Honorary consultant of KEM hospital. During his work over the years he opened his surgical skills to treat poorest of the poor .He always believed in the philosophy that best medical care should be available to all socio economic strata patients .He worked tirelessly day and night to cure urological diseases .
During his training days at England ,he had decided that he will make Urological education easy and free to all those who want . Keeping this in mind he started Kulkarni School of Urethral Surgery in 2006. The centre is engaged in permanent educational activities for urologists who are interested in the in-depth training in reconstructive urethral surgery. They conduct an operative workshop on a weekend once every month where about 8-10 Urologists from India and abroad attend inside the OR and watch surgeries LIVE. Kulkarni School of Urethral Surgery is very popular amongst the urologists. More than 3000 National and International urologists have visited and taken benefit of this educational endeavour. This is a purely academic activity with no registration fees.
Dr Sanjay Kulkarni has been invited as a faculty to demonstrate urethroplasties in 50 countries. He has travelled tirelessly to educate young urologists across the world. His efforts have led to development of many a Urethroplasty surgeons across continents. Dr Kulkarni invented many techniques of reconstruction. The “Kulkarni Urethroplasty” for pan urethral stricture is popular around the world and is published in Hinman’s Atlas of Urology, American text book. Dr Kulkarni is proud and honoured to have authored chapter on Urethra and Penis in the 2022 Edition of Love and Baily, Practice of Surgery which is the textbook for medical and surgical education .
Dr Kulkarni is a visionary. He wanted to create a world class state of the art facility dedicated to the city of Pune and catering to patients across the country and globe. He established “UROKUL” Kulkarni UroSurgery Institute in Pune a 100 bed single speciality hospital and training centre on 1Jan 2023.
For his immense contribution the developing a speciality of Urology Dr Sanjay was awarded “President’s Gold Medal” by the Urology Society of India(2011) .Hon.President Late Pranab Mukherjee awarded Dr Sanjay Kulkarni “Dr BC Roy” award by the President of India for developing new speciality (2016)
England acknowledged his academic contribution and conferred Honorary membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (2017).He was conferred Honorary member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons and Urology Society of Australia and New Zealand(2017) Dr Kulkarni was the President of the Society of Genito Urinary Reconstructive Surgeons (2014)Dr He received “ Life Time Achievement award” from GURS (2023)He was nominated to be President of the Society International de Urology, SIU (2019-21).
He received Felix Guyon Medal by SIU for important contribution to Urology and the development of SIU (2023).Dr Sanjay Kulkarni was President of the Urological Society of India (2023) .The British Association of Urological Surgeons awarded him with St Paul’s Medal for 2024.The worlds most coveted Urology society is American Association of GU Surgeons. In 2024 he was made a member of American Association of GU Surgeons.
Dr Sanjay Kulkarni has dedicated his entire life for betterment of Urology services and developed Urethroplasty across the globe. He is a proud Puneite and helps shine Indian contribution in the world.
