Bertrand Tombal

Bertrand Tombal is a Full Professor of Urology at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) and the head of the Department of Surgery at the Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc in Brussels, Belgium. He was President of the European Organization for Study and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) in the past. The EORTC is the leading academic cancer study group in Europe. He is interested in urinary oncology from both a scientific and a medical point of view, especially when it comes to prostate and bladder cancer. Professor Tombal got his MD from the Université catholique de Louvain in 1990 and his PhD from the same school in 2003. During his PhD, he looked into how growth factors affect apoptosis in prostate cancer cells and how apoptosis is affected by growth factors. A part of his study in basic sciences was done at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. The main area that Professor Tombal is interested in in the medical field is treating advanced prostate cancer, especially with hormone therapy and the creation of new biological agents. He is in charge of the uro-oncology department at the Université catholique de Louvain and is in charge of several research studies in this area. Professor Tombal has also written more than 400 papers, books, and book chapters. Several awards, including the European Association of Urology thesis award in 2003, have been given to him for his work in urology. He has also presented at many national and international conferences.
