Abstract Content
Female urethral stricture is an underdiagnosed cause of female bladder outlet obstruction and treatment of it is challenging. The possible etiologies may be infection, prior dilation, difficult catheterization with subsequent fibrosis, urethral surgery, trauma, or idiopathic. Treatment of female urethral strictures are surgical. Although historically treatment consisted mainly of dilatation or endoscopic Otis urethrotomy but was associated with complications and high recurrence rate. So in the last few years a trend towards urethroplasty has been observed. According to the recently published European Association of Urology (EAU) guidelines on female strictures, augmentation urethroplasty should be performed whenever endoluminal treatment is no longer a viable option. The use of vaginal grafts have been reported for urethroplasty.
This retrospective review of 9 women who were treated with a dorsal vaginal graft urethroplasty .All women underwent preoperative evaluation with history, physical examination, USG, RGU and MCU, Urodynamics and urethral calibration. After surgery patients were evaluated with physical examinations, urinary flow rate and post void residual volumes.
All 9 patients underwent dorsal vaginal graft urethroplasty with age range30 to 65 years, mean 56 years at Dhaka Medical College, Cumilla Medical College and some private clinics from January 2018 to March 2025. Follow up period was 3 months to 5 years. All patients had satisfactory outcome with good urine flow and less PVR. No patients has need repeat surgical procedure.
: Vaginal mucosa graft urethroplasty may be considered as good and a first-line treatment option for definitive treatment of female urethral stricture.
