Abstract Content
Introduction
Simultaneous totally extraperitoneal (TEP) inguinal hernia repair and thulium laser enucleation of the prostate (ThuLEP) can optimize surgical outcomes by reducing hospital stays and operative costs. This study evaluates the safety and efficacy of this combined approach compared to separate surgeries performed by a single surgeon in a single center.
Materials and Methods
A retrospective analysis was conducted on 29 patients, with 21 undergoing concurrent TEP and ThuLEP and 8 undergoing separate surgeries. Primary outcomes included operative time, hospital length of stay, and postoperative complications
Results
Median operative time was similar between groups (concurrent: 227 min; separate: 221 min; p=0.845). Hospital stays were significantly shorter in the concurrent group (median: 3 days) compared to the separate group (5 days, p<0.001). Postoperative complication rates, including urethral stricture (9.5% vs. 25%, p=0.3) and wound infection (0% vs. 12.5%, p=0.276), were not significantly different.
Conclusions
Concurrent TEP and ThuLEP is a safe, effective approach that reduces hospital stays and provides comparable complication rates, making it a viable option for patients requiring both procedures.
