Abstract Content
Introduction
Double J stents have been used in a wide array of urologic procedures. Though generally safe, unexpected catastrophic morbidities may arise.
Materials and Methods
A case of a 38-year-old male who underwent supine PCNL for a right staghorn calculus. Intraoperatively, difficulty in access and profuse bleeding were encountered, prompting immediate termination and antegrade insertion of a DJ stent. Postoperative assessment showed that the DJ stent inserted to the contralateral iliac vessel.
Results
An exploratory laparotomy with extraction of the stent and pelviolithomy was done. The patient was stable throughout the surgery with an operative time of 6 hours and estimated blood loss of 450 ml. The patient was discharged with no complications and stone-free.
Conclusions
All surgical procedures may impose possible catastrophic risk; hence, proper technique and evaluation are essential to prevent these events. Inadvertently inserted DJ stents to the vasculature may occur and diagnosis will entail high surgical suspicion.
