Abstract Content
Urological complications, especially urine leakage, remain the most common type of surgical complication in the early post-transplant period. Tolterodine hydrochloride was used to observe the efficacy on low volume urine leakage.
A total of 16 living-related kidney transplant recipients were involved in this study who developed low volume urine leakage through drain tube from 1st to 2nd POD after transplantation. DJ stents and Foley catheter were kept in situ. Patients were divided into two groups. Group A was given tolterodine (4mg) daily and group B was not given
Urine leakage stopped within 1 week of Group A. But leakage persisted 2-3 weeks of group B. The treatment also reduced the catheter related symptoms of group A.
Tolterodine, an anticholinergic medication used to treat overactive bladder, can potentially help to reduce urine leakage in individual’s post-renal transplant, as it relaxes the bladder muscles, also decrease the urge to urinate frequently.
