Abstract Content
Introduction
Prostate cancer has evolved over the past years. The increasing availability of PSA testing has allowed greater detection of cases as reflected by increasing trends in incidence and mortality rates. In turn, a number of treatment modalities have also been available for patients. Brachytherapy utilizes radioactive isotopes delivered directly to the tumor with minimal exposure to surrounding healthy tissues and a reduced treatment time.
Materials and Methods
The study aims to examine the patients who have undergone low dose brachytherapy in a single institution in the Philippines from 2004-2024.
Results
A total of 882 men underwent low dose Brachytherapy with prostate sizes ranging between 11-89g and a pre-treatment PSA average of 18.11ng/ml. An average of 98.52% (SD=1.73) of the prostate received 100% of the prescribed dose with a minimal amount involving the rectum (Mean=0.25g; SD=0.40) but increased exposure to the prostatic urethra (UD90 Mean=104.86 G; SD=11.02).
Conclusions
Brachytherapy is among the effective and safe treatments available for prostate cancer. It is a viable option for treatment, with excellent delivery of the prescribed radiation dose directly to the prostate with minimal involvement of the rectum and urethra. This offers a form of targeted treatment with a good side effect profile.
