Abstract Content
Transurethral resection of prostate(TURP) surgery is one of the mainstream procedure for benign prostatic hyperplasia in urology. The resected prostatic tissue allow pathohistological analysis of these specimen. The objective is to rule out if there is incidental finding of prostate cancer
We reviewed medical records of patients who underwent transurethral resection of prostate with laser alone or TURP combined with transrectal ultrasound guided prostate biopsy(TRUS-biopsy) in single institute from June 2020 to December 2024. The medical records were analyzed retrospectively, and we collected the data including PSA, prostate volume, pathologic results, clinical stage. Then we calculated the rate of incidental finding prostate cancer.
A total of 543 patients who underwent transurethral resection of prostate with laser was recorded, the mean age was 70.3 ± 0.8 years old, and mean PSA was 7.15 ± 0.9. And 51(9.3%) patients had incidental finding of prostate cancer. Among them, their mean PSA was 12.1 ± 3.6. The histopathologic result reported 24 cases (47%) with grading group 1, 9 cases (17%) with grading group 2, 7 cases (13%) with grading group 3, 7 cases (13%) with grading group 4, and 4 cases (7.8%) with grading group 5.
Patients who aged around 70 and with PSA about 12 ng/ml, undergoing laser prostatectomy, had 9% rate of incidental prostate cancer.
